CHARLESTON – Huntington High junior Jordyn Dawson was chosen as the Class AAA girls basketball all-state first team captain by the West Virginia Sports Writers Association.

Dawson was joined on the all-state first team by teammate Dazha Congleton.

The second team included Monica Mitchell from Logan. All-state third team captain Karlee Alderman from Spring Valley was joined in that group by Timberwolves’ teammate Erica Mathis and Ericka Budd of Huntington High.

Players on the all-state honorable mention list included Lexie Sheffield of Huntington High, Haley Haggerty of Cabell Midland, Alex Petry of Spring Valley, Mary Rogoszewski from Hurricane, Maddy Weeks from Hurricane, Lindsey Pritchard of Lincoln County and Mary Lawman from Winfield.

Dawson is a 5-foot-10 junior who led Huntington High to the state championship game and averaged 20.2 points, 13 rebounds, seven steals and five assists per game.

“Jordyn is an amazing player who can do just about anything,” said state champion Morgantown head coach Jason White. “I have absolutely no problem with her being the captain. She’s strong, big, fast and plays hard.”

Congleton, a 5-8 senior, averaged 16.0 points and was the Highlanders’ top scoring threat from the perimeter.

Mitchell, a 6-2 senior, was a 1,000-point career scorer for the Logan Wildcats. Budd, Alderman and Mathis were all seniors.

Morgantown, which won the Class AAA title for the third consecutive season, had 5-10 senior Sydney Holloway and 5-11 junior Lydia Adrian on the all-state first team while senior Rachel Laskody of the Mohigans made the second team and senior Paige Poffenberger was part of the third team.

Holloway was a repeat first team selection from 2015.

The first team also included John Marshall senior Torrie Derrow, Parkersburg South senior Anna Hayton, George Washington senior Shi Banks and South Charleston junior Aaliyah Dunham.

St. Albans sophomore Jaden McDaniels was the second team captain.
