HUNTINGTON – “Super Tuesday” described Jordyn Dawson’s play.

Dawson scored 19 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and grabbed four steals Tuesday night to help Huntington High (23-1) hold off scrappy Winfield, 53-41, in the girls basketball Class AAA, Region IV co-final at Lucas-Archer Gym. The victory sends the second-ranked Highlanders into the state tournament March 9-12 in Charleston.

Huntington High out-rebounded Winfield 30-23, but the Generals (10-14) stayed close throughout, using an effective zone that the Highlanders found difficult to shoot over, going 3-for-12 from 3-point range. Dazha Congleton made 3 of 6 shots from beyond the 3-point line. Her teammates combined to go 0-for-6.

When the Highlanders finally tried to drive to the basket, they often drew fouls, but made just 4 of 16 free throws.

Lonnie Lucas said he thought his team had a letdown and “went through the motions” after an emotional 91-64 victory last week at Spring Valley. Highlanders guard Kearsta Turner agreed.

“Our defense wasn’t the best,” Turner said, noting that Winfield made 15 of 34 shots. “We didn’t play as well as we usually play. I guess we just weren’t ready. We have to play in the state tournament the way we did against Spring Valley.”

Lexi Sheffield, who scored 10, hit a basket at the halftime buzzer to give Huntington High a 30-23 lead. HHS scored the first eight points of the third quarter to go ahead by 15 and appeared as though it might be on its way to a rout of a team it defeated 54-27 on Jan. 21.

Huntington High heads to the state tournament expecting to be either the No. 1 or No. 2 seed against an opponent to be determined.
