Senior became HHS’ all-time leading scorer

HUNTINGTON – Huntington High girls basketball player Jordyn Dawson left Archer-Lucas Gym on Friday with a large sign and an autographed basketball.
In the first quarter, Dawson even caused a stoppage in play. Her basket with 2:26 left made her the all-time scoring leader in Huntington High history for boys or girls. The senior needed five points to reach that plateau and she finished with 26 to spark the Highlanders to a 77-48 win over Albany Alexander (Ohio) in the First Sentry Bank Huntington Invitational.

Dawson passed Tavian Dunn-Martin, who had 1,638 points in a boys career with the Highlanders. He’s now playing for the the University of Akron. Dawson’s total is now 1,664 points.

When Dawson scored the record-breaking basket, play was interrupted so she could be recognized. Teammates hugged her and she went into the stands to celebrate with family and friends with roses in her hands.

“I was nervous,” said Dawson, who’s signed to play at Xavier University. “I’m happy I got it. It meant a lot having family here. They’ve been with me all the way.”
Huntington High’s pressing defense gave Alexander fits early and the Highlanders raced to a 17-0 lead.

“We played much better than Wednesday,” Dawson said about a loss to Boyd County. “Our pressure got to them. We played our game.”

After the game, Dawson’s teammates and coaches signed the game ball. Dawson also received a large sign with signatures to commemorate the moment.

“As a coach, you know it means a lot for her,” Highlanders coach Lonnie Lucas said. “It’s not what she set out to do. She’s just been coming on. If we win, she has to do it.”
